Monasteries built on top of stone towers four hundred metres high, by monks who hauled everything up in nets. It's a long day from Athens — and the moment the rocks first appear above Kalabaka's rooftops, nobody in the van is looking at their phone.
An early start beats the city traffic, and the Vito is built for exactly this — recline, sleep, watch Greece change from olive groves to mountains. We stop for proper coffee near Thermopylae, where three hundred Spartans once held the pass you're about to drive through.
The oldest and highest of the monasteries, six hundred years old, reached today by steps carved in 1922 — before that, visitors went up in a rope net and prayed it held. Inside are smoke-dark frescoes, a wine cellar of giant barrels, and windows that open onto empty air.
A short drive along the rim brings you to Varlaam, whose chapel holds some of the finest frescoes in Greece. From its terrace the scale finally lands: sixty-odd sandstone towers, a handful crowned with buildings, vultures riding the wind between them.
Down in the town the tavernas grill lamb over charcoal and the rocks lean over every table. There is time to eat properly — this is Greece; lunch is not a sandwich in the van.
One last stop at the balcony of Meteora for the photograph everyone came for — the whole rock forest in one frame. Then the van points south and you doze back to Athens, arriving around eight in the evening.
Yes — monasteries require covered shoulders and knees for everyone, and wraps are available at the entrances. Trousers with a wrap over them are fine in practice.
Around 300 at the Great Meteoron and 150 at Varlaam, with rails and landings. If stairs are a concern we can visit St. Stephen's instead, which is reached over a small bridge with almost no climbing.
Each monastery closes one day a week on a rotating schedule. We check before your tour and adjust the pair we visit so you always see two.
