Kos keeps its history out in the open — a healing sanctuary on a hillside, a castle above the airport plain, a village stacked up a mountain. This morning threads the three together, with the stories told on the road between them rather than read off a plaque.
The great healing sanctuary climbs the hillside in three terraces, and you climb it the way patients did twenty-three centuries ago. From the top the view runs across the strait to Bodrum — the doctors chose this spot for the air, and standing there you understand why. Go early and you share it with swallows, not crowds.
The Knights of St John walled this ridge in the 14th century, and the castle still holds two chapels and a view over half the island inside its ring of stone. Down in the village a restored windmill turns when the meltemi blows, and the traditional house next door shows how Kos lived a century ago.
Zia stacks its whitewashed lanes up the mountainside, and the shops are small enough that the owner is usually the maker. Thyme honey in recycled jars, olive-wood boards, herbs cut on the hill above — and a taverna terrace where lunch comes with the whole north coast laid out below you.
An easy descent through the Asfendiou villages with a photo stop at the best bend, and we leave you at your hotel door with the afternoon still ahead of you.
Around two hours in total, on ancient stone and village lanes with some steps at the Asklepieion and the castle. We pace it gently, and there is shade and a café at every stop.
The Asklepieion is usually under €10 per adult with EU youth and senior discounts, and the Antimachia castle and windmill ask only a small contribution. Zia is free to wander.
